My Sunny Maad, directed by Michaela Pavlátová, was nominated for the 2022 Golden Globe Awards in the category of best animated film. The Czech-Slovak-French film, which premiered in October this year, will compete with the Danish film Flee and three films from Disney studios – Encanto, Luca and Raya and the Last Dragon.
The animated co-production film My Sunny Maad has already won the Jury Prize this year at the largest and most prestigious animated film festival in Annecy, France, and also won the main prize at the largest Latin American film festival in Guadalajara, Mexico (FICG). The film is produced by Kateřina Černá and Petr Oukropec (Negativ), co-produced by Czech Television (creative producer Helena Uldrichová) and animation studio Alkay (Petr Horák). The film was supported by the State Cinematography Fund. Foreign co-producers are Sacrableu Production, BFILM, Gaoshan Pictures, Innervision, supported by the Audiovisual Fund, Eurimages, CNC and Creative Europe – MEDIA.
And how did a Czech film get into the main competition for American film and television awards? In an interview with Forbes.cz, producer Petr Oukropec said “After the success of the film at the Annecy Film Festival and the other awards it collected in the face of strong competition from around the world, we realized that we almost have an obligation to try to succeed on American soil. In the case of The Globes, it helped that several important critics fell in love with the film, and they then recommended it to colleagues. When we managed to meet the main conditions for voting, we also had to invest in the campaign.“ For the PR promotion of the film My Sunny Maad, he hired an agency in Los Angeles, where the film was also personally promoted by the director.
