Two animated short films supported by the Czech Film Fund will compete at Sundance — the most prestigious independent film festival. It is another accolade in the collection of major achievements for Daughter and SH_T HAPPENS. Both films were included in the Short Film Competition. The festival will take place on 23 January to 2 February 2020 in Utah, USA.

I was delighted to learn that our school and Czech animation is represented by two films at Sundance. I am very happy that Czech animated film is riding on such a good wave now and I can be a part of it. It gives me a feeling of encouragement,” said Daughter director Daria Kashcheeva. This animated puppet drama comes from the university FAMU (Department of Animated Film), co-produced with MAUR film company.

Sundance is great news for us that came in the middle of a working night and boosted our morale by at least 300 percent. We are very excited to have an American premiere at their biggest and one of the most popular festivals in the world.  Every year we follow the selection at the festival and we are pleased that Sundance has been dedicating a lot of space to short animated films. And it is great that this time, there are two animated films from FAMU,” added Michaela Mihályi and David Štumpf, directors of SH_T HAPPENS. The film was produced by BFILM, in coproduction with Bagan Films.

Daughter, directed by Daria Kashcheeva, won the student Oscar in a field of more than 1,600 films from around the world in September. In early summer, it had been won two awards from the world’s largest animated film festival in Annecy, France. And the awards continue to pile up from film festivals around the world. The film was produced with the support of the Czech Film Fund as part of a series Trojhlas (Three Voices). The second animated short film by David Štumpf and Michaela Mihály, SH_T HAPPENS, premiered in September in Venice in the Orizzonti section of innovative and new forms of film expression. It was the historic premiere of a Czech film in this section of the Venice Biennale. This film was also supported by the Fund in a call for animated film production.
